Your brain is the best weapon
With it, you have a chance to win no matter if you use sword, axe, hammer, or any of the less worthy weapons
Without it, it doesn't matter what you have.

Marty all the warrior bars for PvE can run [whirlwind attack] its a melee attack.
It just depends on your play style imo. I like spiking crap down so I use axe. If you like messing with people hammer is the way to go. If you like applying conditions then sword.

Some say it's better to be respected than feared. I say, is it too much to ask for both?
"There is no Best"
I'd like to humbly disagree... I'd like to think that the best depends on what you're going to do.
You can't possibly, mathematically or otherwise, tell or prove to me that a hammer can cause deep wounds better than an axe.
You also can't tell me that axes can generate more dps than a sword, or a sword can cause better spike damage than an axe...
You want the best?
Axe - the best spike damage in the game. Unconditional deep wounds make it also the best weapon to cause the most dangerous condition in the game...
Knockdowns & foe 'removal' - Hammer. You want that monk to stop casting or want to remove that enemy from the fight for 12s. or more? Hammer will 'kill' a foe the moment it can land it on its ass... He won't be playing for a few and you can get popcorn. No axe/sword can 'remove' someone from a fight like this.
Condition spam & dps? - Sword, obviously. You want to do more damage per second so nobody can save your hapless victim with any form of regeneration? Bleeding, Deep Wound, Cripple. All can be dumped using only 2 skills... 0_0 A warrior doing this to somebody is pretty much rape...
There is a best weapon. You can't do all three at once, it's called balancing. You need to decide what your goal is as a warrior. To say 'to kill things' is kinda ignorant and uneducated. To say 'spike damage as quickly as possible' or 'remove a foe from the fight as quickly as possible' will give you the right path to the weapon you want.
I like axes cause everyone and their mother in every rpg-ish game in existance uses RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOing swords... I also like shields, hence hammer's out my window...

Obviously this will not show how well you knock downs and interrupts are working... don't know how to test those other than personal experience.
Also no one has mentioned spears or scythes so far. scythes have some nasty crit damage (my last crit did 176da against a 80ar paragon... that hurts) and there is also ebon dust for blind. Spears have burning and a deep wound + damage, though I would say spears are more about pressure than pure dps.
Anyhow I think Silverblade is right... all weapons have different uses, so find one that gives you the best results (notice I did not say most fun, fun builds are often not the most... useful) and use that.

As warrior, you won't want to use knives, scythe, etc. You can only put 12 points into it and no runes can help lessen the point investment. I'm certain, a 16 weapon warrior will out damage any other non-warrior weapon type out there bar none... [if a warrior is wielding, obviously]

if you have 16 points in a weapon attribute, you're doing something terribly wrong, imo. 14 (12+1+1) is more than enough for your weapons
a few extra dmg isn't worth sacrificing 75hp

Actually scythe is the biggest spike damage in the game. But thats not the point.
The highest attainable constant dps that can be attained by a warrior is DSLASH spam with conjure correct me if I am wrong. There are better builds for certain areas. Best way to be good at PvE is to switch between builds imo.

Best?
Along with Yukito, Marty, Celestial, and all of the regular posters... it depends on what you are doing... Each Weapon has its highs and lows, and depending on what you are fighting and how you want to deal with it depends on the weapon that is 'best' for that encounter...

Lol, so your saying that there is a best weapon and then explain that they are all good in different ways. There is no overall best weapon, they are all equally good at the specific role they play.
Its like saying "I have a bicycle, a chainsaw and a sofa, which is best?" There is no best they all do different things. If you narrow down the question then of course you can get an answer but that is not the OP's question it was "Best weapon for PvE/PvP" to which the answer is "I don't know what do you want to do?".
